Gift of Sight Programme: Burkina Faso Eye Unit
For over a decade, gift of sight programme of Humanity First has been providing free cataract surgery across many regions of Burkina Faso, and even attracting patients from neighbouring Mali and Niger. In 2014, Humanity First deployed a mobile eye surgery unit which has been used in many
locations, from Bobo Dialasso and Banfora in the west, to Ouahigouya in the north,
Tenkodogo and Ouagadougou in the centre and Dori in the east. Thousands of patients have
had successful cataract surgery from the unit. Also, there have been occasions when the
unit has been operating just outside a hospital, and even when the hospital lost power,
because of its internal generator, the unit continued to operate despite the local power
outage.
